Mrs. Oswald Chambers by Michelle Ule

An inspiring story of a woman ahead of her time, devoted to her husband and committed to serving God's kingdom.

I've lived my whole life with a vague awareness of My Utmost for His Highest but until this past year, I'd never actually read any of it.

Now that I'm nearing the end of the 365-day book, I finally understand why it remains the world's bestselling devotional.

That's why I was so excited when this biography arrived:

This is the story of the woman behind the devotional -- not just because she was a wife supporting her author husband, but because she was the driving force that resulted in the compilation and publication of not only this best-seller, but 29 other books with her husband's name on the covers as well.

It's hard to imagine what life must have been like for Biddy Chambers, but author Michelle Ule does an excellent job bringing to light the many amazing challenges that she faced before the classic book was published.

Written in an easy-to-follow style that I'm sure results from writing her several successful novels, Ule walks us through Biddy's experiences which range from a WWI YMCA camp in Egypt, to a return to post-war Britain with a toddler in tow -- all the while providing hospitality to a never-ending stream of visitors and missionaries and even nearly losing everything in the London Blitz during WWII.

16 pages of photos help place you in Biddy's world.

I found myself feeling both quite inadequate and inspired as I read this book -- although I don't think I would have the tenacity to carry on as Biddy did under such difficult conditions, just reading how one woman conquered her challenges with aplomb empowered me to think of ways to serve God in some small way myself.

If you're a fan of My Utmost for His Highest or you just enjoy an uplifting tale of a real-life hero, then you need to read this book.
